One of the five galleries at the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center, the Gallery of Faith houses several artifacts and paintings related to faith and religion. The exhibits highlight the importance of faith in an individual's life. The gallery comprises a number of paintings and texts pertaining to the birth and life of Jesus Christ. Franciscan Monastery, a century-old monastery is one of Washington DC's hidden delights. The garden, set on a hillside and reached by winding paths, is full of big trees and places to sit quietly among the flowers and small outdoor shrines. The public is allowed to view the upper church's full-scale replicas of Holy Land shrines. In the lower church, visitors will find a replica of the Roman catacombs, which can only be seen on scheduled tours. Guided tours last about 45 minutes.
Mount St. Sepulchre Franciscan Monastery dates back to the late years of the 19th Century. The monastery gardens are managed by the Garden Guild of the monastery. The guild was set up to protect and develop the beautiful gardens in adherence to the Franciscan norms. The gardens are home to lush rose plantations of different species. Replicas of popular shrines and grottoes are also found here. Of noteworthy importance is the mock tomb of Saint Jude and the a representation of the Stations of the Cross.
One Eight Distilling is founded by four passionate liquor lover. Located on Okie Street North East, it is an interesting distillery producing varieties of spirits and selling it to reputed bars and restaurants. They are producers of District Made Vodka, Rock Creek White Whiskey and Ivy City Gin. The distillery can be visited by general public only on Saturdays and there are different tours available. Meeting, reception or any other private event can be arranged for about 50-300 guests.
The Plymouth Congregational Church helps keep the faith of God alive by spreading the message of love and peace. Their campaign reads as 'Our faith may be 2000 years old, but our thinking is not!' The African American Civil War Memorial is a landmark on Vermont Avenue. Built by Ed Hamilton, this 9-foot (2.7-meter) bronze sculpture is called The Spirit of Freedom. It honors the 209,145 lives of African-American servicemen lost during the Civil War. Walk along the curved wall to read the names of these brave soldiers and sailors.
