Naftzger Memorial Park is located in downtown Wichita. Although it's small, it makes up for its size in style. There's a waterfall located in the middle of the park where visitors can sit and enjoy the sound of the water. Bring a lunch and take a seat at one of the picnic tables, or find respite in the beautiful gazebo. This small park is a treat for those passing through downtown who want a bit of time outdoors.
Inaugurated in 1901, McAdams Park has delighted the families of Wichita for over a century. A verdant oasis of the city, the park has several well-paved paths covered with a canopy of trees making it perfect for a morning run or an evening stroll. The park's carefully-manicured landscapes are perfect for bringing a picnic, while the ball diamonds and tennis courts are ideal for local matches and tournaments.
Featuring several lakes where you can fish, Sedgwick County State Park is a must-visit for fishing aficionados. Even if fishing isn't your thing, there's plenty to do for the whole family. Hike or bike along a trail, taking in the sights of wildlife. If you're into sports, head to the softball field or basketball court for a game. In the winter, the sledding hill is tons of fun!
Learn about local plants and wildlife at the Great Plains Nature Center. Inside, exhibits like Kansas Wildlife and Prairies of the World are educational for both kids and adults. Outside, trails provide the perfect opportunity to view some of the flora and fauna you learned about inside. Remember your trip here with something from the gift shop - it offers a variety of books, toys, and other fun memorabilia.
The Prairie Sunset Trail is gorgeous and the perfect way to experience nature. The trail is gentle and approximately 12 miles (19 kilometers) long running through open grassy meadows, farmlands, densely forested areas, lakes, and ponds. It's perfect for biking, hiking, bird watching, jogging, and just enjoying the serenity of nature at its best. The trail is suitably named and offers spectacular views at sunset making it a must visit when in the city.
All Star Adventures is an amusement park featuring rides and a variety of outdoor activities. Apart from two mini-golf courses where you can practice your teeing and putting skills, there are adult go-karts, arcade games, bumper cars, a driving range, batting cages, and bowling. Two of the fun rides here include The Paratrooper and The Spider. The former consists of ten pods that move at an angle, so you move sideways as the ride spins, while the latter spins around in varying circles with different spinning seats that move up and down. You can also test your gaming skills at The Arcade that offers over 85 exciting games such as the Pac-Man, Ski-ball, and Slam-A-Winner. There's plenty for the kids, too, such as kiddie go-karts, a coaster, an electric track, swings, and copters. If all that activity makes you famished, head to the Snack Bar and enjoy delicious pizzas, drinks, and candy.
A visit to Tanganyika Wildlife Park fulfills the dual goals of an educational and fun-filled outing for the entire family. One can view common, rare and endangered species such as clouded leopards, Purple-capped Lories, Nigerian Dwarf Goats, domestic ferrets, Southern Three-Banded Armadillos and Huachuca Mountain Kingsnakes. Keep an eye out for special events like Pumpkins at the Park, Safari Splashdown and Twilight Hours. This park conducts safari classes and other educational activities for students and scouts. It also runs the Species Survival Fund for wildlife conservation. One can host birthday parties and weddings at this much-loved family park.
